Today we are thrilled to welcome Molly McLaughlin to Midday Movement! Molly is a regular at Michael’s class, Midday Movement’s intern, and a force to be reckoned with in bringing fierce intelligence to ideas of the moving body. Brave the weather, you don’t want to miss this one! Read more about Molly and their class below:
ABOUT MOLLY’S CLASS
Molly teaches a class that seeks to take us out of our dancer bodies and put us into a state of kinetic engagement with the space around us. Using the floor as our starting point and guide, we’ll build energetically from the ground up, finding a sense of dynamic alignment as we move through sensations of tension and release.
Utilizing meditation, improvisation, and contemporary forms, this class will bring us into sweet, sweaty contact with our physical intuition, allowing us to bend and breathe with fluidity and ease, enlivening and restoring ourselves through our dance practice.
Molly McLaughlin is a mover and dance maker based in Somerville, MA. Their work acknowledges the body as a moving text– adaptable, interpretable, and existing only momentarily within an ever-shifting context. From this principle, they are able to parse and investigate issues of gender & sexuality with a sense of curiosity, rigor, and criticality.
Molly studied dance, English literature, and creative writing poetry at Tufts University, where they now work as the administrative assistant in the Dance Program. They have presented recent work at Green Street Studios and at the Tufts ‘Dances at Noon’ series. They are currently working as an intern for the Midday Movement Series, where they have had the opportunity to explore dance education in a broader community context. They have studied with Daniel McCusker, Renata Celichowska, Michael, Figueroa, and other Boston-area artists.
Their work can be found online at attndance.com.
Well the weather sucks so lots of indoor training today! Danny was just introduced to the Hold Command so he can eventually learn to carry his leash or lightweight objects gently in his mouth while on adventures with his mom. Here is a clip of our trainer, Micaela shaping this command with a banana. It’s the first object he’s been asked to hold that isn’t one of his toys and he was so gentle he barely even made a mark on the peel. Always impressed with his eagerness to learn! Over time we will add distance, distraction, duration to this command so it can be productively used in real world situations. .
Don Lincoln (born 1964) is an American physicist, author, host of the Youtube channel Fermilab, and science communicator. He conducts research in particle physics at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and is an adjunct professor of physics at the University of Notre Dame. He received a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics from Rice University in 1994. In 1995, he was a codiscoverer of the top quark. He has coauthored hundreds of research papers and, more recently, was a member of the team that discovered the Higgs boson in 2012.
Radioactive decay is the transmutation of one subatomic particle into another. In most instances, what happens is that existing particles move to new configurations. However in radioactive decays using the weak force, a particular kind of particle disappears and is replaced by a completely different particle. In this video, Fermilab’s Dr. #DonLincoln talks about how it all works and even describes a type of decay that has never been observed and, if it were observed, it would require the textbooks be rewritten.
