"Peanuts Museum"(1995, C-Print, Diasec perspex mount, wooden frame, 200 x 100 x 5cm)
First exhibited with Bloom Gallery, during the San Francisco Art Fair at Phoenix Hotel, that took place in the week the new San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art was opening in January 1995.
The work depicts two 'Peanut Man' characters, surrounded by art magazines, in front of a 'Peanuts Museum' set in a surreal landscape. One is performing a trick, balancing 2 peanuts on his nose, while the other one, wearing the hat, is witnessing the trick in awe.
In the critique of art the question is often asked whether an object presented as art should be considered as art, or should actually be regarded as a mere trick? Just peaanuts? Made without any effort or skill at all?
This question was apparently especially relevant for the audience confronted with the first appearance of a new artform created with a technique they were very unfamiliar with, in a style they hadn't seen before; computer graphics.
When confronted with the ultra slick image language of my works at that time, a look that they could only remotely relate to in reference to airbrushed art or Disney type commercial imagery, it was hard for them to understand what was involved in it's creation, and what was it all about...
When they found out these pieces were created on a 'computer', they often went: 'Oh, these new computers can do everything that is possible', (like computers would do this by themselves) without understanding anything about what was needed to create art on a computer, nor what skills were necessary to do so.
Hence the question: Is it Art, or is it Peanuts? Is it Art, or is it a trick?
I guess that's the question a lot of Avant Garde art has been confronted with at the time it appeared...
